Saturday saw the Shetland Open Singles take place in the Lerwick Legion with an excellent 86 players entering on the day looking to pick up maximum Intercounty points and be crowned Shetland Singles Champion 2024.

The first rounds produced some very competitive ties and very close games with the winners progressing to later rounds the losers of the preliminary and 1st round dropping into the plate competition.

Following these early rounds in the main competition, the quarter finals which were played over the best of seven legs saw Stuart Paul of the Posties beat Bar Fines’ Craig Main 4-3, Delting Boating Club’s Liam Sutherland defeat Bar Steward Tommy Williamson 4-1, Roger Irvine of Whalsay beat Mirrie Dancers player Richard Hughson and Aiden Couper of the Posties beat Ajax’s Clive Scott.

The semifinals were played over the best of 9 legs, and which saw defending champion Liam Sutherland progress though to the final following a 5-1 victory over Stuart Paul whilst Roger Irvine secured a 5-3 victory over Aiden Couper to join Liam in the Final.

The Final was played over the best of 11 legs and saw Roger emerge a 6-2 winner to claim the Shetland Men’s Open Singles Champion 2024 title

Running alongside the main open competition ran the plate competition which saw the 38 of losers from the first rounds of the main draw compete against one another over the best of 3 legs up until the final.

Once again, the first round produced several competitive ties before the quarter finals saw, Marc Henry beat Euan Grogan 2-0, Iain Blance defeat Gary Devaney 2-1, Gareth MacRitchie beat Maurice Clark 2-0 and Ben Mayes defeat Brain McLeod 2-1

The final was contested by Gareth MacRitchie and Marc Henry after both players beat Ben Mayes and Iain Blance respectively 2-1 in their semi finals, the final was played over the best of 5 legs and saw Gareth run out a 3-0 winner to win the Shetland Open Singles plate competition.

The Highet checkout during the days play came from Ryan Inkster who checked out a 158, other 100+ checkouts were recorded from Craig Sneddon 126, Ryan Goudie 100, Aiden Couper 153 & 120, Steven Hughson 109, James Mcnab 100, Liam Sutherland 131, Michael Light 103 & Roger Irvine 121.
