
Lynda Pottinger Presents winner Sean Grogan with the Charlie "Zoom" Pottinger Memorial Shield.
Last Friday saw 54 men enter the 2nd Grand Prix of the season, The Charlie “Zoom” Pottinger Memorial which was held in the Sandwick Social Club. After some close games in the early rounds, which also saw a first round repeat of the previous week’s final. The Quarter finals saw Barry Couper beat Stuart Paul, Roger Irvine Beat fellow Whalsay player Grant Thomson, Sean Grogan beat Paul Bell and finally Kevin Wiseman defeat Frank Watt.
The two semi finals were played over the best of 7 legs and saw Roger Irvine reach the final after defeating Barry Couper 4-1. The second semi final saw Sean Grogan play Kevin Wiseman with Sean running out a 4-1 winner to reach the final.
The best of 9 leg final saw Roger take the first leg before Sean took the next three legs in a row to take a 3-1 lead. Roger took the following 2 legs to square the match at 3 legs all before been first to hit the double in the 7th leg to go 4-3 up. As the high standard of play continued it was Sean who once again squared the match at 4 legs all, before going on the claim the deciding leg to run out a 5-4 winner of a high quality final to claim The Charlie “Zoom” Pottinger Memorial shield for the first time.
The Ladies competitions saw 9 entrants playing a straight knockout competition which saw some close games in the early rounds. The semi finals then saw Zara MacRitchie beat Sandra MacRitchie 3-1 whilst Melanie Couper edged past Maggie Lyall 3-2 in the second semi. In a close Final between Zara and Melanie, it was Melanie who emerged with a 3-2 victory.
The Shetland Darts association committee would like to thank the Sandwick Social Club and its staff for the work they put in on the night, Sandra for selling Raffle tickets and to Lydia Pottinger and all family of Charlie Pottinger who continue to support the event. £250 was raised during the night and will be donated to charity.
